Direct Moulded Sole Boots

The British DMS boots, short for Direct Moulded Sole, are a standard issue piece of footwear used by the British Army during the late Cold War and into the modern era. Introduced in the 1960s, they replaced earlier ammunition boots and represented a shift toward more practical and durable construction methods.

Made from black leather with a directly moulded rubber sole, DMS boots were designed to be hard wearing and suitable for a wide range of conditions. The sole was bonded directly to the upper rather than stitched, improving water resistance and reducing maintenance compared to older designs. Their simple lace up construction and sturdy build made them reliable for everyday military use.

DMS boots were widely worn during training and operational deployments, including service in the Falklands War, where they formed part of standard issue kit. While effective in many environments, their limitations in cold and wet conditions eventually led to the adoption of more specialized combat boots.
