East German M56 Stahlhelm
The East German M56 helmet is one of the most distinctive Cold War helmet designs, issued to the National People's Army beginning in the mid 1950s. Unlike many postwar helmets that drew heavily from the American M1, the M56 followed a uniquely German design path based on experimental concepts developed during the final stages of World War II.
Its shape is immediately recognizable, featuring a deep, flared profile with extended coverage around the sides and rear of the head. This design was intended to provide improved protection against shrapnel while maintaining good balance and comfort. Constructed from steel, the helmet was built for durability and reliability in field conditions.
The interior features a liner system designed for stability and adjustability, along with a chinstrap to secure the helmet during movement. Over time, several variants were produced with minor changes to liners and fittings, reflecting ongoing refinements during its service life.
