East German Strichtarn Trousers

Strichtarn, often referred to as “rain pattern” camouflage, is a distinctive East German military design developed in the 1960s and widely issued to the National People's Army. Its unique appearance sets it apart from other camouflage patterns of the Cold War, featuring a base color overlaid with vertical dashed lines intended to mimic falling rain and help break up the wearer’s silhouette.

Designed for use in temperate European environments, Strichtarn was created with simplicity and practicality in mind. The pattern proved effective in wooded and urban terrain, where its linear elements disrupted the human outline in a different way than more organic camouflage styles. Its straightforward design also made it easier to produce on a large scale.

Garments made in Strichtarn were constructed with durability and functionality as priorities, suitable for both field use and everyday military duties. The material and cut were designed to handle regular wear while allowing for comfort and ease of movement in a variety of conditions.
