Desert Night Camouflage Parka

The Desert Night Camouflage parka is a unique piece of U.S. military outerwear developed during the Cold War for use in desert environments at night. Introduced in the 1980s, it was designed not for daytime concealment, but to reduce visibility under night vision devices, reflecting a growing emphasis on modern battlefield technology.

Its distinctive grid pattern, often referred to as “night desert,” features a subdued green base overlaid with a crosshatched design intended to disrupt the wearer’s outline when viewed through early generation night vision optics. The parka itself is lightweight and oversized, made to be worn over other gear and uniforms, allowing for quick layering in cooler nighttime conditions.

The garment saw notable use during the Gulf War, where it became a recognizable part of U.S. desert equipment. Despite its intended purpose, advancements in night vision technology eventually reduced the effectiveness of the pattern, leading to its gradual phase out.
