The M-51 Field Jacket

The M51 field jacket is a classic piece of U.S. military outerwear, introduced during the early Cold War as an improvement over earlier wartime designs. Developed for the United States Army in the early 1950s, it was built to provide better protection, comfort, and versatility in a wide range of conditions.

Constructed from durable cotton sateen, the M51 featured a longer cut for added coverage along with a button in liner system that allowed it to be adapted for colder weather. A concealed hood stored in the collar, multiple front pockets, and adjustable drawstrings at the waist and hem gave it a practical, field ready design focused on functionality.

The jacket saw extensive use during the Korean War and continued into the early years of the Vietnam War, bridging the gap between World War II era gear and later developments like the M65. Its design would go on to influence future field jackets, carrying over key features that remained standard for decades.
