M69 Flak Jacket
The M69 flak jacket is a key piece of U.S. military protective gear from the Vietnam era, developed to provide improved defense against shrapnel and fragmentation on the battlefield. Introduced in the late 1960s, it was an evolution of earlier flak vests, offering better coverage and a more refined design for troops operating in combat zones.
Constructed with layers of ballistic nylon, the M69 was designed to stop fragments from explosives such as artillery, grenades, and mines rather than direct small arms fire. Its design featured a front opening with snap closures, a protective collar, and extensions that offered additional coverage to the upper body while still allowing for mobility in the field.
The jacket saw extensive use during the Vietnam War, where it became standard issue for many U.S. troops. While it added weight and could be uncomfortable in hot, humid conditions, it provided a significant increase in survivability against the most common battlefield threats of the conflict.
