MKIV "Turtle" Helmet

The Mk IV “Turtle” helmet is a distinctive piece of British military equipment, introduced during the later stages of World War II as an improvement over earlier steel helmet designs. Developed for the British Army, it featured a deeper, more rounded shape that provided better coverage to the sides and back of the head compared to the earlier Mk II helmet.

Its “turtle” nickname comes from this smooth, domed profile, which was designed to offer increased protection from shrapnel and battlefield debris. The helmet was constructed from manganese steel and paired with an improved liner and chinstrap system, making it more stable and comfortable for extended wear in combat conditions.

The Mk IV saw widespread use in the final stages of World War II and continued in service through the postwar years, including conflicts such as the Korean War. Its updated design marked a shift toward greater protection and practicality, influencing later helmet developments.
