Viet Cong Pith Hat
The Viet Cong pith helmet, often referred to as the mũ cối, is a lightweight field hat widely used by communist forces during the Vietnam War. Adopted from earlier French colonial designs, it became standard headgear for both Viet Cong guerrillas and North Vietnamese troops operating in tropical conditions.
It is typically covered in green cloth and fitted with ventilation holes at the crown, allowing heat to escape and making it well suited for hot, humid environments. The design features a rounded dome with a short, angled brim, offering protection from sun and rain while maintaining a low profile. Inside, a simple suspension system and sweatband provide comfort, while a basic chinstrap keeps the helmet secure during movement.
Unlike steel helmets, the pith helmet was not intended for ballistic protection. Instead, it prioritized comfort, airflow, and practicality for long periods in the field, especially in dense jungle terrain.
